3 Important Steps to Understanding Your Clients' Language

Knowing your brand values is only the first step that our promo team need to take in order to be a successful representation of your company.

They also need to be able to communicate with your clients in a language that is familiar and understandable to them. In order to do this; you need to be very good at doing it yourself.

When we talk about the importance of speaking the “same language” as your client, we’re not referring to suddenly learning French or Spanish.

Learning to speak your clients’ language essentially means understanding them better than ever before. This is integral for successful brand engagement.

Good communication with a client

Listen to Them

Every company has their own language. Whilst you’ll fully understand your own already, it’s important that you do what you can to become an expert at theirs. To do this, the first thing you need to do is to listen to them.

Listening to how they communicate will allow you to gauge whether your voice appeals to their way of speaking or whether you need to adapt your own style. For example, your technical tone of voice might be unfamiliar to your clients who are non technical.

Interact With Them

You won’t be able to fully understand your client if you don’t spend time interacting with them. You should immerse yourself in their environment and on their terms. The more time you spend doing this, the better and more confident you’ll become at speaking their language.

This doesn’t just mean spending time with them face to face. There are lots of different ways in which you can immerse yourself into their industry and environment. This could mean joining LinkedIn discussions or attending networking events.

 Understand Their Vision

By listening to the client and interacting with them on a regular basis, you should start to grasp an understanding about their company and their vision. It’s understanding this vision that is going to help you fully understand their language.

What do they want to achieve? What are their biggest accomplishments? Where do they see themselves in 10 years?

Find out their purpose is going to be the key to fully understanding them. And once this happens, you’ll have no problem adapting your language to fully align with theirs.
